Fantastic Vol. 10

I’m habitually awful at self-promotion, so I’ll keep this brief. The latest edition of the Da Capo Best Music Writing anthology comes out today. As always, it is filled with summarily excellent music writing. I have yet to finish the book, but early standouts include Josh Clover’s “Terrorflu,” Jesse Serwer’s “Bass is Loaded,” David Ramsey’s “I Will Remain Forever Faithful: How Lil Wayne Helped Me Survive My First Year of Teaching in New Orleans,” and Jonathan Lethem’s “Fly in the Ointment.”

My LA Weekly article, Who’s Biting J Dilla’s Beats? and the subsequent follow-up interview with Dilla’s mother, Maureen Yancey were both selected. Considering that the legendary Greil Marcus guest-edited this year’s 10th Anniversary Edition, it is a particularly humbling honor to be included. Thanks are in order to editor Randall Roberts for pointing me towards the story in the first place, Ma Dukes for her candor and insight, and of course, to Dilla.

  1. congrats man, well deserved

  2. woo!

  3. nice work dude

  4. YES. Congratulations.

  5. ditto.

there’s something really upsetting about the whole mess with Dilla’s estate and his mother. the article and interview together are so depressing. it’s a bit like a drama where you get to see things from the different perspectives of the major players involved, with some hints at what their intentions might be, and that troubling sense that you’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg.

it goes to show that sometimes great music writing can simply be a great story (well-written, of course ;)). hopefully this doesn’t come across as flippant or disrespectful, (this story has real ramifications for real people) but it makes me want to hear about this from the perspective of Dilla’s baby mommas, like there should be a part 3 to this tragedy.

  6. wow, that’s awesome, and well deserved. congratulations.

  7. congrats! must feel good to hold that in your hands… dj ruptures got a piece in there too, right?

Thanks guys. Yep, Rupture’s got a piece that I haven’t read yet. I’m sure it’s good. Carrie Brownstein is in there too.

  9. Fuck this book- I’m gonna start my OWN Da Capo and not invite Greil Marcus. See how he likes that shit.

As far as I’m concerned, Jim Jones is the only real Da Capo.

  11. Kudos!
