Yeah but the Stones, Zep and Sabbath started off by doing nothing more than ripping off blues bands and The Talking Heads were nothing if not arty white kids who took funk's rhythms (though sadly not its looseness). I'm not saying the Pains revolutionized rock with their debut: it's a catchy pop record indebted to its influence but I definitely prefer that to a band that tries waaayyyy too hard to be original and misses the mark completely. Give them time, they show a lot of potential here and they're already expanding on their new EP.

but isn't there something wrong when you rate their potential greatness based on what bands they rip off? I like them, but they're not doing anything other than rehashing the catchiest bits of previous bands.

Not me. I saw them at PFork fest, boring as fuq. If they have any melody I didn't hear it behind the monotone drone drippy guitar banalness
