Just to slide in a little late on this one: there are so many great Brit hip hoppers: roots manuva, dizzy, Wiley, Rodney P, Charlie Dark, Wayne Lotek, just to name a few. Great stuff and well worth checking out.

As for Masta Ace - Disposable Arts: Love that album. Far from the good times of the early 90s, Ace returned and he was angry. There's this bristling quality to it, like the hip hop powers that be had been flaying him with a cattle prod for five years. Makes me shiver with adrenaline every time I throw it on.

jason, to paraphrase renato, "an english bloke who can't rap for shit made a better rap record than most of your favorite rappers this year."

god knows how many people voted in this thing we did. i didn't vote for either streets album, but they both made the top-40. i'm not going to sit here and argue with consensus.

Douglas-
Certainly rap isn't American anymore, it's just this particular non-American can't rap for shit and his beats are more UK garage than hip-hop. How does that make a great rap record again? Oh yeah, escapism, and storytelling and stuff!
All I am sayin is I hope see Edan twice on this list in the next 30, oh well he's not escapist in the Mike Skinner sense. Just a great rapper with exceptional beats and phenomenal cadence.

That was sloppy commenting on my part. I neglected to amend with the caveat that the only people I've ran into or heard/read/smelled that championed the record with a straight face were mid-aughts O.G. hipsters (as opposed to the shitfit-electro-reverb variety of today) or rock critics (and maybe Toure), or rather, a disappointingly safe and overrated record frequently nominated into the canon since its release that represents a school particular school of though on "good hip hop records".

Weiss- K, but exceptions don't negate the observation. Its interesting that CJ voted for the record but I'm not speaking in absolutes.

You'll never guess from your latest list as to what actually MADE it. To paraprhase Prince Paul on Deltron..."It'll knock your SOCKS OFF!"

chris: as a black rap writer who contributed to this feature, i can assure you that, although it didn't make my personal list, there is a wealth of good things about a grand don't come for free, primarily the "anal-retentive realism." to me, the album provides a sense of escapism that "white rap writers" probably felt when they listened to "today was a good day."

jason: a record full of geezers and birds signifies hip-hop's greatest triumph during this particular decade: rap music isn't just american, anymore.

anon: not to spoil the suspense for you, but do you REALLY think there's any way donuts would have been omitted from this list?
