LA Times: Busta Rhymes’ “Back on My B.S.”

I suppose it’s own fault. “Don’t Touch Me (Throw ‘Da Water on Em)  was so vintage Busta that I figured that he had another The Coming/When Disaster Strikes in himor at least another Anarchy. Wrong. There’s nothing “bad” about “Back on My B.S”–Busta’s talented and likeable enough to carry most tepid tracks.*  But his 8th studio jaunt is so compartmentalized and focus-grouped that you’d think it was conceived by the marketing gurus who brought you Poochie. Major label hip-hop albums have gotten so risk-averse that you’d think they were being produced by actuaries.

Ultimately, “Don’t Touch Me,” got axed from the final tracklisting. The only way Universal could’ve done a bigger “Fuck You” to the long-time fans was if they’d had Devin the Dude singing the hook.  Barring a mental breakdown that compels him to live out the “Gimme Some More” video, Busta’s legacy is secure. And I’m sure in no time he’ll be back bodying mixtape cuts and cameos.  But in the meantime, “Back on My B.S.” is on some bullshit.

* Save for “Sugar,” and glowsticked eunuch rap cut, “World Go Round,” which shall never be spoken of again, lest we tarnish the good memories.

kill dem sounds like some black eyed peas.
    look at dat muffin?

  2. yeah, the most i can say in the album’s favor from what i’ve heard (of course i’d say this) is that they replaced an awful Jeezy verse with a sick Weezy one. “Big Bang” wasn’t great or anything but at least it was kinda like a better “Documentary,” mostly flash but not in a forgettable way like most of that album.

  3. Yeah, Throw the water on em was better than pretty much all of BOMBS, but I still think Busta came with an entertaining album… Definitely doesn’t have the replayability that his classics had, but I still like over half of the album and think Busta is making the best of his corporate label environment. And I’m still getting Arab money. 1

  4. HAHAHAHA Poochie so good, wonder if anybody else gets that?
