I think you're probably being too kind. I saw her at Lolla a few years back and she sucked. Hard. It was a shame b/c the crowd was REALLY excited. This was after her visa issues and I don't even know if Kala had been released yet. She meandered around stage, would just not sing parts of the songs, looked bored and she bitched about her voice the whole time. Diplo tried hard to get the crowd going but it was a lot of awkward golf-clapping. She also kept saying "that sounds better in a club" so she should either get a decent stadium show going or stop doing them!

Side note: I love her music so this isn't a blind rant.

'Big deal. “Pop star’s success aided by looks,” is a story so spavined that it could only be broken by the Onion.'

well put and spot on.

Why is MIA's promo shot up there seemingly taken in one of those "family photos for £29.95" stalls you get in provincial town shopping centres? That pic belongs next to one of a baby in a chef's hat covered in flour.

"M.I.A’s STORY is Slumdog Millionaire, her actual background, not so much…"

Uh-oh, ugly-problematic time!

But seriously, I would admit that M.I.A. IS Slumdog Millionaire - the shitty Hollywood movie, not the Third World poverty it's ostensibly about and in such great sympathy with/for. This of course being exemplified by the fact that 'Paper Planes' plays in the movie. That said, nothing to hand-wring over too much (the movie, way more deserving of hand-wringing, I would say), and she does have a few great songs.

Like Kanye, it's always 2 steps forward 1-3 steps back with her. She sings about political stuff!...and then wears more materialistic neon-crap than Busta Rhymes at a rave. She comes off as a real person!...and subsequently a bitchy superficial person. The Clash didn't wear leisure suits or publicly dated socialites.

Those half a dozen great songs DO kill though, even the hater in me had to come around to that fact.
