Method Man and Redman ft. Bun B-”City Lights”

howhigh-method-red_2.jpg

I’m not sure when I’ll be able to stop replaying this one. This is one of those songs that I made the decision to post halfway through Red’s verse. If you’d told me that in 2009, Reggie and Clifford would be making tracks with Jeezy ad-libs and auto-tune, I’d have sold my copy of Muddy Waters back to the Wherehouse.* But this is just absurdly good.  According to Def Jam’s website, Blackout 2 is slated to drop April 28. Maybe we should all start writing letters to Lyor Cohen now.

In the interim, you should re-evaluate the first Blackout, a sorely underrated effort. Moldering in the Stylus archives lies this excellent exegesis from Barry “Disco Vietnam” Schwartz. Read, download, smoke, etc.

*That’s completely a lie, you’d have to pry that shit from my cold, sativa-stained claws.

  1. Amen, brother. And I fully co-sign with your estimation regarding the initial “Blackout” album. I still get a contact high just listening to it.

  2. Thanks for re-posting that piece Jeff. However, I would like to say I’ve since revised my feelings about Tical 2000 (it’s a fucking classic) and the piece is rather unfair to Redman. In my defense I recall this was Wu Week at Stylus.

    Shit, that’s right.

I shouldn’t have been such a dick towards La the Darkman.

  4. Well you was right about the movie Darkman being boring, but the LA’s boring flow is his trademark, so it doesn’t say much to note it’s boring. And I like it.
Same feelings about that new red&meth.

  5. Umm…that track’s hard to ignore. And it just made me dig out the soundtrack to “The Show.”

  6. best pimp c sample on a chorus since el-p’s “fuck the law”

  7. Hi-5 on Blackout. Also, Doc’s Da Name — great album.

  8. Stylus was easily the best music review site on the internet. Pour out a sip for them…

Love their Temptations piece “Ball of Fire” (I think).

  9. Wait…Def Jam still has a website? And it had “accurate” release dates and information on it? Well, I’ll be damned!

    One.

  10. “My money like Southern Cali, it never rains”–Method Man, winning

  11. I hate to say it but the Southern Cali line is basically what weezy said on make it rain remix.
