It was basically ruled out of the competition for arbitrary reasons while a bunch of thoroughly mediocre films get nominated (I haven't seen Slumdog or the Reader so I can't say about them but Benjamin Button, Milk, and Frost/Nixon all were lesser works nominated almost out of default) in the Best Picture category meanwhile an insanely popular film that a lot of critics and moviegoers consider a masterpiece (Tray aside) basically got the shaft because of the source material and the genre. I mean let's be real for a second, are any of these films going to be considered "classics" in five years? The Dark Knight, for or better or worse, already is a classic. That's why it should have won Best Picture and that's why the Oscar's lost my respect this year. They should have AT LEAST nominated it, and in my opinion, Wall-E and The Wrestler should have been up there too. But that’s exactly my point.
