Mulatu Astatke: Infinitely Better than Jacobim Mugatu

13mulu650.jpg

What gives Los Angeles music geeks? Mulatu Astatke comes to town to perform a set backed by Cut Chemist and a 15-piece orchestra, and not one of you can post a decent review to further compound my misery. Don’t act like I’m not looking at you O-Dub and Roberts. Still bubonic and bleary on this Tuesday A.M., but hopefully clawing back towards some semblance of stability. Tomorrow, something, I promise. In the meantime, allow me to offer up some Mulatu, the legendary Ethiopian jazzman, whom my head remains too hazy to write about adequately. The tunes speak for themselves–far better than Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and as the above photo indicates, the man is far too stylish to rock a piano key necktie.

Edit: Classic Drug References Comes Through With a Review

Damn, that show sounds incredible. I wish they were taking it on the road, or at least bringing it to Chicago.

I can’t believe I missed this. I am sooo bad at keeping up with musical happenings, but damn. I really, really wish I could have seen that.

It’s actually the first in a series of four. The last show with David Axelrod should be particularly outstanding, so not all is lost.
