Your negative expectations are based on weak assumptions, Tray. That’s not a healthy way to approach new music. You can call it cynicism or realism or cautious optimism: you’re missing the point. It’s simply not interesting to base your opinions on your expectations because then it’s about you and not the song. Frankly, the song never seems to stand much of a chance. Fix that.

daniel: as a baby-faced noise nerd (i stole that from jeff, but i don’t think it’s bitin’), i naturally and wholeheartedly agree with you.

tray: “realistic” and “noone is expecting anything from cuban linx II” should never be placed in the same sentence. i understand that you’ve barely (if even) been listening to hip-hop for seven years, so you probably don’t understand the magnitude that the original had when it first dropped, and– if you haven’t noticed– the nearly fifteen years after.

whether it turns out to be another classic or not, cuban linx II is a big deal to those of us who’ve been listening to hip-hop before dipset’s heyday. which is to say, everyone except you.

I’m just realistic. When you put out back to back albums like Immobilarity and the Lex Diamond Story, it’s a little hard to believe that you’re magically going to put out a great album just because you’re calling it the sequel to one. Especially when you hook up with Dre, whose latest big contributions were on albums like Curtis, Kingdom Come, and Buck The World, and they weren’t exactly standouts either (though I have a weakness for ‘Fire’). But see, my cynicism was proven wrong!
