I thought Food and Liquor was disapointing. Lupe's a really dope emcee but he sabotaged himself by changing the album after the leak and relying on those overly dramatic beats. He's the textbook definition of a rapper who needs a better A&R to say "look, this doesn't work for you, here's why".

i agree with berto: i found out about screamin' jay hawkins through "kick in the door."
sach, you finding this particular source (and the other two tracks) made my day (which has been an embarrassment of riches already, and it's only 11am). "time: the donut of the heart" is one of my favorites from donuts (as well as a "potential lady-friend mixtape" staple).

Being able to listen to a rap song you really like, hopping on to the-breaks.com or wherever to find the sample source, and then finding an old soul/jazz/funk/etc. record you'll come to love too is one of the best things about being a hip-hop fan. Have a Happy (and safe?) New Years.

I don't know if it was in retrospect, but I sure felt it was at the time. Looking back, Ghostface came strong twice, as did the Roots and the Clipse (while not living up to the HUGE hype) were dope too. I also personally liked The Game, Rick Ross, E-40 and The Team's albums as well.

But in general...Busta Rhymes, Jay-Z, LL Cool J, Mobb Deep, Cam'Ron, Ice Cube, DMX, Outkast, Ludacris, Xzibit, Fat Joe, Snoop Dogg, Mos Def and Styles P all dropped weak albums. That's a generation's worth of rappers catching L's to me. Hell Nas did too although his message resonated with fans.

Then there was the prominence of Dem Franchize Boyz, Yung Joc, Chingy, Birdman+Wayne, Jim Jones, Yin Yang Twinz... Lupe Fiasco disapointed, the underground didn't really do much, Cee-Lo dropped a dope album that had nothing to do with rap...

So you know, having just done that reflection (with Wikipedia to remind me of all the stuff I hated) I'm gonna stick with it. Terrible year.

I feel you on the sentiment of the post, Sach. You're absolutely right on that. However, 2006 was a bad year for Hip Hop? *Stops self from making a list or building a case because Sach's mind is mind clearly set on it* Well, good luck with the move and Happy New Year to you and Weiss.
