Shame on you for for encouraging Kanye in creating the most lazy album of phoned-in knock-offs ever. Good pick on the Elzhi, though. Vastly underrated MC.

[...] Weiss of Passion + LATimes fame gives us his Best Albums of the Year List, along with some inline mp3 downloads. He also uses really big words in his Kanye album review… (I say that in a loving, hope to have his lexicon one day, sort of way): Heartbreaks & 808s is Kanye West’s Electric Circus. It’s his Love Below. His Life of Chris Gaines.. His Trans–except done directly in the prime of a white-hot career. It’s “emo pop.” It’s too much like Tears for Fears. It’s not enough like his first album. It’s got too much techno. It’s not techno enough. His production is inspired by Gary Numan. No, it’s inspired by El-P. But it’s not hip-hop! Why can’t he sing? His use of auto-tune is stupid. No, it’s a brilliant way to project a robotic and detached despondency. It’s artistic overreach. It’s a genius in his prime following his muse in whatever warped direction it takes him. It’s a work wrought by tragedy. It’s the product of self-indulgence. The lyrics are fourth grade poetry. The album sounds incondite and muddled. Its hasty construction lends it an immediacy and raw power. It’s ephemeral at best. It’s a Zeitgeist tapping, tour de force, that captures the personal and political at their lowest ebb. It’s a Rorschach blot designed to elicit every possible emotion and opinion. It may be all these things combined. It may be none of them. It may be the best album of the year. It is. [...]

I think Madlib is overlooked because he's too prolific. His releases seem tossed off kinda because they are followed up so quickly. Also I kinda think he needs to do some self editing and then release like a rarities every 5 years but I guess the fact that the beat konducta records are so jam packed is part of their charm. Also The College Dropout is definitely Kanye's best album although I like all his material and would nominate him as one of the artists of the past decade.

Ayo, Tray, that The-Dream album is great, but the Ye is even better. Not that “big“ or “stupid“ are ever necessarily bad things, but if you think 808s is either, I gotta wonder if you actually have ears.

Damn, I wish I participated.
This turned out amazing, fellas.
That Madlib record is exceptional, but I haven't listened to nearly enough of the top 10 as I should.
High fives all around, here's to 2009!
