Domino-”Sweet Potato Pie”
Anyone else hear this slipped into the background of a scene on Entourage last night? Speaking of which, the episode in question might have been the most supreme case of wish fulfillment-as-television that I’ve ever seen. After yesterday’s program, LA might be wise to pass some good ol’ fashioned anti-Okie rules to help quell the ever-ongoing influx of carpetbaggers cum Ed Hardy-clad clones flocking to meet models and “hone their craft.” In that order. On the other hand, “Sweet Potato Pie,” remains the jam (no Paul Weller.)

“Sweet Potato Pie” is indeed the jam. that sample of (the immortal) Gwen Guthrie totally caught me off guard. it’s off “Peanut Butter”, which anyone who cares about that sort of thing was mixed by the (even more immortal) Larry Levan. shit was also sampled for one of my all-time favorite early 90s cheesy piano house anthems, “Anthem” by N-Joi. that’s why it kinda floored me to hear it a Domino tune - he’s like the only major Hiero member who’s solo work I never got accquainted with. anyway, here’s to rappers killing it with classic disco/80s electrofunk samples - makes me think of Mobb Deep, who were all about that.
