Edit: Link for Ciz’ Mixtape: Tailgating- The 30 Second Rule is now at the bottom of the post.

In an attempt to clear up any possible misconceptions that I’m some backpack-bound, underground apologist who can’t get down with anything that doesn’t involve polysyllabic “scientific” rappers, or cursory, hackneyed cliches about “keeping it real,” I present to you the latest track from North Philly’s 2ew Gunn Ciz

One of the brightest lights from the burgeoning Philly scene, to reiterate what I wrote in May,” Ciz has a strong street buzz, good news for the Washington Post crowd who mistakenly conflate talent with street cred (it happens.) Billing himself as “crack rap meets backpack,” Ciz has both the requisite “swagger” and drug-dealing bonafides to satisfy the superficial set and enough clever punchlines to please the Skyzoo scene. Everyone wins.

  1. I prefer 2 Gun Un. Un as in Un Kasa. No, he sucks (although his intro to Diplomatic Immunity is worth a listen for the ridiculous back-and-forth with Cam as to what’s really, really, really good), but this guy sounds very retro. Like 2002 or earlier. Partly his flow, partly something about his delivery, partly the dated I’m-closer-to-getting-signed-than-you-are raps - yeah, my money’s still on Peedi.

Has it really come to the point where we’re calling stuff retro if it sounds like it’s made 2002 or prior?

Sometimes, I think I just need to only listen to pre-WWII blues and call it a day.

  3. I mean, a 1990 flow would have been very outdated in 1996. By 2002 Hell On Earth was a beautiful artifact. Six years is a long time in rap.

What’s a “2008 flow?” Shameless ripping off Jay-Z and Lil Wayne?

  5. Well that’s a good question. I’m not sure that flows have progressed too far past the highlights on Blueprint 2. I guess Wayne’s flow is a novelty, though it’s often attributed to Jay, and Ross and Jeezy, however much you may hate them, and however derivative they are of Master P, are bringing something to the table that wasn’t out there six years ago. The main difference between then and now, perhaps, is that rappers have had time to assimilate Jay’s flow, whereas back then he was pretty sui generis. Anyway, this guy sounds like someone on the back end of a really old Kayslay tape. Though he’s not without charm.

  6. lol well I was hanging out with Peedi last night and he’s been signed twice now so its hard to being closer than him. Thanks for the look Jeff. I appreciate all comments, criticisms and dissections. At least some people actually take the time to listen. Tray check the mixtape and tell me what you think. Im sure there is something on there you will enjoy. peace.

  7. Tray:

Do you like lyrics? Just curious ’cause most the dudes you dig are flow heavy more than anything else.

  8. Yeah, I really do like lyrics, although I can tolerate really bad ones (unless they’re as bad as Game’s), but I feel that in this day and age, good lyrics are often attached to really bad beats, really nasal voices, really mediocre flows, really awful hooks, really annoying personalities, or really stupid messages. Like take a Lupe. A talented writer with about three-four good beats in the two albums he’s made so far, this insufferably preachy attitude, smarter-than-thou personality, a ton of space shit that don’t even make any sense, and so on. Or Nas, who’s still very good line for line but doesn’t have a clue what he’s trying to say anymore. Or all these unkut.com types who are trying to bring ‘94 back. Now this guy, happily, doesn’t really fall into any of those categories, but he’s not blowing you away with anything he does either. I’ll look up his mixtape though - I am from Philly so I’d be very happy if he turned out to be good.
