LA Times: The Game-L.A.X. Review

A lot of you Internet lurkers seem to hate The Game, but per the gist of my Times review that ran yesterday, he raps well, picks good beats, gets great guest appearances, and makes albums that are competent homages to the West Coast gangster rap that I grew up loving. Granted, I probably could’ve used 250 words to drone on, but thus is life. Besides, I co-sign pretty much the entirety of Zeus’ review.
The moral of the story is that The Game is not better than your favorite rapper but he’s better than you think. Also, there is a high probability that at some point in the next 14 months, The Game will break into Dr. Dre’s house and boil his pet rabbit.

i got into an argument one time when the doctor’s advocate came out, because i called game “a mediocre rapper with an incredible ear for beats.”
now, i’ll say that he’s stepped his game up to being a merely decent rapper, but he still has, far and away, the best ear for beats in rap right now.

I get that his entire career is an homage to the West of yesteryear, but don’t you think for the West rap scene to come up again or progress, that rappers like The Game need to get over or abandon the past?

Of course. In fact, I wish he would do just that. Like I said, he’s no savior and he’s inherently flawed but he does do his one thing very well.
I’m currently working on a big piece on the next generation of LA rappers for LA Weekly. It comes out next month and will address many of these issues.

Dope, can’t wait to read the feature.
Okay, I see your point about Game. Maybe like a West Coast version of Little Brother.

i drone on myself about this in my new post, but how does this guy rap well? his flow always sounds the same and he doesn’t seem to ever play off his beats. and i’m hard-pressed to find any really good beats here besides “Angel.”

I’m not trying to hate on the guy.
But I just can’t get over how much he raps about other rappers.
It gets to the point of being ridiculous sometimes.
It’s almost like he’s got nothin else to say besides shout outs to other MCs.
He’s got a decent flow and fairly decent rhyme play…but nothing you could call original in my opinion.
