First off, that isn't a kilt (I know it was a joke), they're traditional Muay Thai kickboxing shorts. I heard this album and I was like "Meh". Then again, I haven't bought a Tricky album since Juxtapose dropped. I knew after hearing "Blowback" that it was time to move on.

Nice writeup, though.

"fey where he was witchy, melodic where he was gruff, coy where he was, sort of, coy"

I love this line. it's exactly the kind of pedantic nonsense I would write, espcially the use of the word "fey". plus it cuts to the heart of the matter; Tricky's much better working through a female conduit. he's like the part of Prince that made Sheena E & various Paisley Park skanks sound awesome but w/out the other part where Prince excelled as a band leader/solo artist/dynamic personality. not just Topley-Bird, but also Bjork, the various chanteuses that Massive Attack employed, etc. speaking of MA I always preferred to Tricky to Portishead in the "people who worked w/MA and then inherited the style they pioneered" category. I can appreciate Portishead intellectually but so much of it just godawful boring. Tricky on other hand, was always interesting, if uneven, up until he fell off hard in the early 00s. I always thought he was a little disappointing though; like, there was so much potential there that never came to much.

anyway, good to see Tricky's still kicking around. his first 2 albums are some of the only ones I'm embarassed to have been into when I was ~12-14. (I imagine a lot of people 10-15 years older than feel the same about Prince compared to whatever other horrible bullshit they were listening to in the 80s).

Nice review - very fair. The album has its moments, though it's not a complete return to form. I liked 'Past Mistake', though it rips off 'The Eternal' by Joy Division.

It got me thinking, though: croaky, stoned, free-associating lyrics, paranoid nonsense, pop sensibilities mixed in with guitars, dark reggae digressions and compelling weirdness. In a parallel universe somewhere, this is selling as much a 'Carter 3'.
