The Weekend Song: EPMD-”Da Joint”

Hadn’t heard this burner off of EPMD’s first comeback record, Back in Business, in a hot minute. Randomly, it came on a friend’s car last night,  and subsequently started an impromptu rap-a-long, as indeed, this is “da joint.”

Question to ponder: have any two worse rappers made as much great rap music as EPMD?

  1. Further questions to ponder:

Were EPMD the two least skilled emcees to make a great/classic group? (i.e. Nice & Smooth)

Did any other group put on as many successful acts as EPMD? (Craig Mack, K Solo, Redman, Das Efx) or get deals for so many so so ones (Knucklehedz, Hurricane G, etc.)?

Can you remember two producers that have so many classic tracks and hit songs to their credits but still failed to find any real solo success (see all of Erick Sermon and PMD’s solo deals and LP’s from 1993-2008)?

Neither Erick or Parrish are considered great emcees but they’re both in the top 20 all time most important Hip Hop producers in the history of the game. All I gotta say is Shuma Management on PMD’s end it’s a wrap.

As an aside, I still own PMD’s first three solo LP’s and a gang of Erick Sermon solos under different names. Lookin’ forward to that 2008 EPMD album!

    One.

  2. you know what other cut off back in business (an album chock-full of them, by the way) was the joint? “symphony 2000.” red and meth have show-stealing verses (but when do they not?), and lady luck managed to take that whole “east coast lady of rage” gimmick and not sound horrible doing it for sixteen bars (see also: the legendary “fight club” battle with remy ma).

and to answer your question, weiss: it’s really doubtful.

dart: sermon is probably a top-25 all-time quality beatmaker. it’s ridiculous how underrated he is 20 YEARS IN.

  3. yeah, this album was sweet- plus it came with a bonus disc of classics.
ES sounds really dumb when he raps but I loved the way he ordered his food in the Rapper’s Delight remake video.

Two words. Group. Home. Enough said.

I’m pretty sure I’m a better emcee than Malachi the Nutcracker.

  5. Oh wait. Scratch that. I thought that said classic album. Because lord knows, Group Home were not a great group.

  6. Classssssssssssssssic

    I make a million
    BUCKS!

  7. Y’all got your EPMD albums backwards…

BACK IN BUSINESS came out in ‘97 and it had “Da Joint,” “Never Seen Before,” “Richter Scale,” etc.

OUT OF BUSINESS came out ‘99-’00 and had “Symphony 2000″ and the bonus disc with all of EPMD’s biggest hits.

Anyway, the weirdest part was that I was listening to BACK IN BUSINESS over the weekend while cleaning my bathroom. And Erick Sermon trumps the current RZA as worst producer on the mic. At least PMD has a cool voice…and he stays he’s hitting hitting (where from) from Brentwood to San Quentin.

  8. RZA is awesome on the mic. Always was. Always will be. If it’s too complex y’all don’t get the basics.

He might’ve been at one time but he isn’t any longer. Digi Snax is only rivaled by “Untitled” as the year’s biggest disappointment.

  10. huh? Digi Snax is awesome!

    Jeebus.

  12. no mission is impossible/ask tom cruise!!!
But it’s spit by Erick (the beat probably helps too)… we got a double standard, don’t we?

  13. @ Disco Vietnam:

Digi Snacks sucked more than Ice La Fox, Alana Evans, Sasha Grey, Aurora Snow and Cody Lane combined.

    That’s a lot of suckin’!

    One.

  14. nah its good
