Missed this one somehow. My internet browsing is seriously lagging lately. Great post and I'll forgive you for not liking Masta Ace. He's the man in my opinion, but that might be my whiteness coming through...hahaha

Interesting post. Lil Wayne's popularity is a mystery I've given up trying to solve. Kiss and Snoop can get away with saying the same shit 100 times 'cause their voice is an instrument.

BTW, someone mentioned no Kweli. Why isn't Murs mentioned anywhere on this? He raps just enough, lol. I haven't heard the new album but he always brings heat.

It's "A LONG Hot Summer" not "One Hot Summer" and calling that album boring is underground rap blasphemy! Shame on you, Zilla! It's one of the top ten best albums of this decade. No hyperbole.

i agree as much as the next dude that "swag" is not a substitute for skills (see: most of Dipset like you kinda alluded to with Jones,) but it does help make your rapping more interesting. i'm not as familiar with Thought, but take Nas for example -- to me, an obviously technically proficient emcee who a decent amount of the time isn't engaging enough in the way he flows or delivers his material. from what i've heard of Thought i'd probably think the same way about him.

i think the word "swag" needs to be retired though. i'm just talking personality, flavor, whatever you wanna call it

If only Mos Def had started rhyming before he started acting. And with those huge child support payments piling up, he'll likely always choose the camera over the pen. I'll just have to be content with one Black Star album and 'Black on Both Sides'.

I completly agry with what you're saying.

But for me the problem is that they are all rapping in the same way. Now I kind of make no differences beetwenn all the rappers. Everything sound the same and it's sad but it seems that I don't really like rapumusic anymore. Hopefully there are some exeptions like Atmosphre, Brother Ali, The Roots, Dilated Peoples, Swollen Members, Akrobatik, Jean Grae or Sage Francis for example (I've seen you think Slug ran out of ideas...) :)

I had the occasion to listen to H.I.N.C. Part 2 from Prodigy and I was so disapointed! The last Fat Joe was also bad for me. I just didn't hear a touch, something showing that Fat Joe is rapping and not anotehr guy from NYC!

And I also think producers have something to do with it. I mean, they also sound the same now. It's just a theory, just a feeling but when I take a look on the albums that disapointed me, I see always the same names. It's not that the producing ist bad, god no, but it's sound the same! Sadly those names are the wellkown. For example : Havoc, The Alchemist, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Swizz Beatz, Needlz, 9th Wonder, Kanye West, The Neptunes, Cool & Dre, Madlib, Timbaland, Just Blaze, Hi-Tek, will.i.am, DJ Khalil or RZA... They are producing beats for everybody and that's why all the stuff coming out looks and sounds the same!
