I mean listen to his contribution to the film’s soundtrack, “Bring It Back,” a song dedicated to “bringing it back to that New York rap.” Keep in made that this was made in 1996! Where else was “the New York Rap?” Namibia?
=======

You are one of my fucking favorites.
I.

I hear you, Weiss, but I'm going to have to agree with herohill here. KRS is an obnoxious, arrogant, headstrong blowhard, no doubt. The last thing he is, however, is overrated. Listen to any of the five BDP studio LPs ('87 - '92) and you'll hear a clarity and focus rarely heard in hip hop lyricism today, not to mention more quotables than Rakim. There's a reason why he's generally included in the top ten of respectable G.O.A.T. lists, and it has little to do with how annoying the guy is in person.

WW: Glad I'm not the only one.
That "Tragedy" video was something else. I remember being at a friend's house when his dad saw it and gave us an impromptu lecture on how all rap was gibberish.

Hero: I'm not saying BDP didn't have some classics. Like I said, Criminal Minded is great and "By All Means Necessary" is good too, but KRS had two or three years of innovation and spent the next 20 reminding everyone how good he was. Not only that, his definition of rap is exclusionary, biased and just plain wrong. But yes...pushing the dude from PM Dawn off the stage does score him major points in my book.

Dart: You need to write a book. Thanks for the knowledge as always.

There were a lot of things about this movie that I loved and I actually did like this film infinitely more than the show. There are a couple of things regarding this film that I'd like to clear up, though.

The Wyclef quote was actually Clef quoting one of his own rhymes "They welcomed me into Jerusalem...5 minutes later they scream "Crucify him!"" was a line from the classic Fugees/PRT collabo from Poor Righteous Teachers' "New World Order" regarding the fickle nature of the industry at the time.

Why would people write Heavy D letters saying that he was an inspiration to them? Here's the short answer: The celebrity basketball game tragedy and which several people lost their lives was Hev's idea and promoted by his homie from Mount Vernon Puffy Combs and it never stopped haunting him. Then one of his best friends died while he was on tour (Trouble T-Roy), right afterwards Hev lost some other close family members and went into a deep depression. During this deep depression rather than break down he recorded "Peaceful Journey" and "Blue Funk". He even started an acting career and became a record exec. That's some inspiration for your ass!

It was really drugs that broke up The Pharcyde. Both their original producer and Fatlip himself became addicted to crack and it's spinoffs. They both become so erratic that the group broke up twice. Look how long it took Fatlip's album to finally come out. I heard some stories, boy!

No mention of Treach in the studio? How about Mack 10 not wanting to discuss guns or drugs on camera but not hesitate to do it on record?

Nice one.

Man, I appreciate the fact you may not like him but saying KRS-1 is overrated is just flat out wrong. He's annoying, but BDP wrote some absolute classics.

Plus, he pushed the fat dude from PM Dawn off the stage. Best thing ever.

You hit the nail on the head as far as the tone of Rhyme & Reason versus The Show. I remember soaking up all the live energy and hilarity of The Show as a teenager, wanting to experience those moments as an MC. Rhyme & Reason, with it's lo-key soundtrack and stock footage shot in slow motion black and white, was like a somber slap in the face that, yeah, the industry SUCKS ASS, even in the late 90s when videos regularly cost a $1 mill.

The scene with Ras Kass talking about the industry model of turning rappers into barcodes still exists today. And I remember watching that scene thinking "Whaaaa? How come no one's talking about this?"

And what other hip hop movie has Guru AND Heavy D on the cover and soundtrack with a joint featuring Ras Kass, Canibus, and Heltah Skeltah all at their zenith?

Yo, I HATE the Edu-Tainer sooo much.
Can't say I remember too much from this flick. I saw it at the art-house place on campus, and the pre-party made a lot of it hazy.
I love the Video for RZA's tragedy- again, back in the days when you thought the Wu would just continue to make awesome stuff.
Stay Up,
WW
