I like To The 5 Boroughs and I don't like this album. And I'll thumbwrestle anyone to the death who says different.

Why not but.
You forget 'Paul's Boutique', a masterpiece in the art of sampling and "collage sonore";
'The in Sound from way out' which 10 years ago already showed the abilities of the Boys to play funk.

This said the Mix up grooves, I agree, even if it suffers a lack of the Beasties

Forgive my French English ;)

I have to disagree with Slobodan on "5 Boroughs." It was hands down the worst Beastie Boys album ever by far.

The Beasties really excel when they do everything BUT attempt to be real, full-time MC's (i.e. rhyming on every beat for a full album). "5 Boroughs" was their "straight hip hop album" full of dull, forgettable self-produced beats. The Beasties were never good as a pure hip hop group--their strength is in their personality and musicianship, not 16-48 bar rants for a full LP. Ad Rock is one of my favorite MC's ever, but he, like MCA and Mike D, works best in 8 bar doses sprinkled across 60-70 mins worth of music.

I haven't listened to "The Mix-Up" yet but I'm still going to see the Beasties next month when they play here in Philly. Regardless if they're a jam band or three old white MC's, their live show is outstanding.

I think you're flat-out wrong on this one. To the 5 Boroughs was a completely enjoyable affair, its stripped-down electro beats sounding fresh at a time when hip hop had finally disappeared up its own a-hole for good. Also, it simply had good tracks.

This new one, on the other hand, is the worst kind of self-indulgent wankery - a tired (or asleep) rehash of former glories that, as one journo put it, couldn't involve more noodle if the Mars Volta played their local Wagamama's.
