New to the blog - and liking it. (You even directly influenced my buying of the new Black Milk CD.)

As a fellow record (and -store) enthusiast, I know exactly where you're coming from with this article. But dude, you should up sticks and come live in Helsinki. I mean, I still have no less than five great small record stores within 150 m of my apartment, as well as Finland's greatest hip hop record store, Funkiest, within walking distance. Seriously, think about it.;)

I'm not a native Angeleno, so I don't have any personal sentimental attachment to the places you've mentioned, but I always hate to hear when a great record store closes down. I'm glad I got to stop by Sea Level the few times that I did, and I wish everyone else the best of luck.

I can't help but be reminded of Boogie Records closing down in my hometown and the fury I felt when I heard that certain community figures were celebrating over it. It was when I realized it was time for me to get the fuck outta Dodge.

Record stores are a huge part of the musical experience. We had 2 Indie stores close in Sydney last year and we were all poorer off. I feel your pain.

Up here in Toronto they just announced the closing of this town's big old favourite record store, Sam the Record Man, which used to have people snaked around the block the day after Christmas for their annual sale, and in which I could find anything, from Léo Ferré to Louis Jordan. They're all going down. We had Towers here -- gone. We had chains, little specialty stores, plunderers, blunderers, and thunderers, and they're all gone. Say good-bye, folks, and download another track.

A nice tribute - surely the fall of the indie record store is a loss for all of us. I feel lucky I had the opportunity to work at one when I was a student at Penn State, and that I dropped by Sea Level before it closed. Good luck, Todd.

Incidentally, those Ibiza collection cds you mentioned are excellent.

Nice eulogy, man. I've never even been there and I'm getting pretty sniffly over it.

"The ideal spot for Junior High kids to rush in with weekly allowances tucked into their palms, filled with the nervous anticipation of buying a record, rushing home to put it into your stereo, hoping it as good as they'd heard it was."

Well put. I miss those days.
