One of my top ten of all time. It seems like it hasn’t aged at all. The music is still crisp but dusty and bass heavy enough for it to blow the speakers. I only remember a few of us back in ’94 who really felt that album.

Considering that Butterfly went to my high school in the hip-hop boondocks of Seattle, but even before I found that out, I was a fan from the day I heard “Cool” on KCMU and was like “What song was that? I WANT MORE!”

I bought “Blowout” on CD when it came out, and loved it then. Bought it again at Groove Merchant when it was reissued on vinyl a couple of years ago, and loved it even more. It’s in my regular rotation of “screw the new shit, I want to listen to the same hot shit from back in the day for the millionth time.”

I slept on this album until college when my DJ friend was playing it on vinyl at his dorm. After asking “WTF? Digable Planets??” he calmly responded, “Dude, this is my favorite hip hop album ever. If you love hip hop, you will love this album.” 8 years later, I still play it at least once a month.

indeed. i bought the disc the week it came out at the BX in england and played it relentlessly for a mighty long time. i still listen to it and just did less than a month ago. it’s truly a beautiful album and a shame they didn’t make a legit follow-up to it. could have had a trilogy! interesting to note — the spaced out hippie vibe in new yawk on reachin, then teh philly inspired black panther leanings of blowout. at first it was a bit disconcerting content wise, but after a bit i simply realized that they were growing up.

Ironically, I was listening to these cats a lot when we made that list, but it didn’t occur to me to include either one of those album, probably because The Fugees filled that spot. Excellent work. Maybe the tepid reaction to Blowout Comb also has a little to do with their antics at the previous year’s Grammys.

Thanks for the reminder. I’m going to go listen to Master of Puppets now.

Jamie: Don’t remember that group, though I did recently give that Us3 album some spins and it was pretty good, better than I thought it would be at least.

Chris: Thanks for helping to point me towards this record. When i saw how high you Joey and Scott had it, I figured it’d be great, but somehow it even exceeded my expectations.
