Coachella 2007-Day 1

Of Montreal-Outdoor Theater (4:55-5:45) width=”425″>But after watching her live show (and watching her stretch the phrase “Hello Coachella” into 34 syllables, I’ve concluded that the ever-evolving Bjork is music’s “Rain Man.” She probably can’t tie her Icelandic Walrus galoshes, but she’s clearly tapped into a higher musical plane than the rest of us. Call her an idiot savant and you’d probably be right. But there’s no denying that her critical adulation is deserved. Backed by a mini-orchestra, tunning through tracks from Homogenic, Post and her new record, Volta, Bjork, delivered a shockingly powerful (and obviously weird) performance, partially redeeming a sub-par opening day of the festival. And I wasn’t alone. Judging from the crowd’s enthusiastic reception, we all got Bjorked.

Sounds exhausting. Did you have a good time?

  2. what the hell is she wearing?

i remember reading somewhere a few months ago that she was working on a singing career and that she had sung for a role in one of her upcoming films, and just like every person who has pull in any type of industry, she probably got buttered up and orgasmically earfucked about how great her voice is.

i would probably stab myself in the ears with a pencil if i even heard that woman say she wanted to have raunchy unprotected sex with me, let alone her sing.

sorry you had to go through that jeff, i really am.

  3. oh god what a jerk fest

Just to add fuel to the tiny fire, the girl bass player/singer from Silversun Pickups isn’t from LA at all. She’s a former high school cheerleader from Orange County. I know this because I went to high school with her but I was not a cheerleader. I’m just sayin’…..

No buyer’s remorse for watching Bjork instead of Shadow?

EL-P was solid, but I could’ve used some more old hits.

Friday actually sucked. Saturday and Sunday were much better. I’ll get into this tomorrow.

Bjork was much better than I would’ve thought Joe. Clothing aside. Ripping on Bjork is like hating on Rain Man for not being an eloquent speaker. ultimately, its sort of like…well, yeah, obviously, but watch him do math. This coming from someone previously very dubious of Bjork.

Nicole: that’s really interesting, but to Nikki’s defense, high school cheerleaders from the OC CAN turn out okay. It’s rare but it happens.

Doug: No, I had to see Bjork. Ultimately to decide that the fact that I really liked her set makes my hating of Joanna “If Bjork can do it so can I” Newsome more justifiable. Totally agree about El-P. I told my g/f the exact same thing actually. Some Tuned Mass Dumper or TOJ would’ve definitely improved the set.

hey Weiss! Really incredible post. Really. Great observations and brilliant jabs where they need to be made. I like the Pickups, but that singer is an asshat…he’s just gonna get worse now the likes of Lindsay Lohan are listening…thanks for the traxs and the laffs…you inspire me to get good on the writing front!

For the record, I didn’t say she wasn’t a cool girl, because she was then and I’m sure she is now.

All’s I’m sayin’ is that she’s from MY hood, not hipster central aka Silverlake.ni

Who cares if Nikki is from LA or not? Its not like OC is in another state. I can hop on the 5 right now and be there in like 20 minutes. Fuck, Brian was born in Hawaii, how come that doesn’t bother you Nicole?
But Jeff I have said it before and I will say it again, SSPU stepped on a ton of people and were complete assholes to get to where they are now, I guess now they figure they won’t fix what isn’t broken.
