Never expected to like this album at all since I've never been very high on the Jux stuff (still don't understand all the hype behind Cold Vein), but I can't stop playing this album. The beats are fucking crazy. Still not sure what to think of his mic skills, I mean, maybe listening to El-P talk about making love with a slave android on a prison ship sounds better while playing Dungeons and Dragons or something, but the beats....damn those beats

You already know I've been digging it. i saw this review a couple days ago on Stylus as well, and it's pretty on point.

I can't tell if this new one is truly more accessible than FanDam or if I've just become accustomed to Producto's style, either way I've been won over completely.

i agree with ian that about that the album leaves you wanting more at the end. granted, i love the outro and what not, but i could've used a couple more songs.

great review weiss. less impenetrable than fandam though don't you think? i was thinking last night about how at the end of fandam, i am exhausted because it really is monolithic, but at the end of ISWYD, i feel like i could use a couple more tracks. i am not saying however that the record is incomplete -- rather that while it still could be characterized as noisy and impenetrable, it is easily his most accessible work to date and leaves me craving more. and it is definitely a 100% complete record. anyhow, keep it up, i have been reading you for a while now and you are easily one of the best bloggers out here on the wild interwebs.

"I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead is monolithic and impenetrable on first listen"

So tru, so true. Upon first listem, I was thinking, "damn, what the f*ck is this cat doing?" I thought I'd bought a freaking NIN record. I hardly imagined kids on a corner with hoodies and Tims rocking this CD, but rather glow-stick twirling ec'ed-out youth.

After a few listens, it has started to grow on me. Complex? Hell, yeah. Listen closely and you'll hear old X-Clan riffs, old breakbeats, and references to "Jesus of Nascareth." Lif, Aesop, and Cage lend tremendously to this record.

Great review.

"FIND THOSE DETONATORS!"

El single handedly makes me cure about Def Jux and indie hip hop again with this album, yo. I've listened to it all the way through about 8 times, driving to and from work. By the time it's over, I wanna light shit on fire, make out with an 18 year old, cry inside a prison cell, and listen to BDP.
