I really hate the phrase "that real hip hop." When I hear that, I know exactly what I'm going to hear and by whom (boom bap, dusty samples, sub bass, call and response songs). Why can't "real hip hop" include current music? Lupe, Kanye, T.I., Outkast...they are all real hip hop in as much as Little Brother is. They just don't wear it on their sleeve and say it to get white people on their side at rap shows.

I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment of the acts on the bill and their annoyance at the current wave of hip hop and their own unwillingness to create a new golden era on their own. Ghostface is the only one who seems to not give a damn about the climate of the market place. He just puts out great records and tours relentlessly. He may talk shit on "Laffy Taffy" at his show, but he doesn't dog out Jigga or the South--he just performs "The Forest" or "Run" or "Metal Lungies" aka "THAT REAL HIP HOP!!"

P.S. I have always associated DJ Kool much more with a go-go type feel, being that he's DC and all. i'm kind of surprised about that.
