Sylvia the next time, I'm with someone and they tell me how they don't like my blog because I hate on everything I'm gonna' pick out the historical record of your comments to show them how you best me in "hating." Not to be confused with "playa hating" mind you.
How can you dislike B&S's set or the Boy Least Likely To live. It's like hating on Santa Claus. Sorta'

However, I'll have you know my inner 15-year old is very happy right now because I'm interviewing Daz from the Dogg Pound on Monday. He says it makes up for my previous street-cred violations.

The Shins were one of the few bands that made me buy their album straight from the merch stand when they opened for Modest Mouse in 2001 (I distinctly recall MM diehards saying "Moon & Antarctica" was a sellout album). Real energetic, very dynamic and you'd never be able to tell that keyboardist was piping one of America's Next Top Models. Although I do hear from the Buddyhead people that the Shins are party animals.

When I saw 'em as a headliner, I was thoroughly unimpressed. They just seemed kinda bored and didn't really have "headliner" stage presence. I think I talk about it here, towards the end...

http://sexy-results.blogspot.com/2005/05/no-more-crap-rolls-out-your-mouth.html

I agree about B&S: that's a solid album. Problem is, it came out too early. Most of the stuff on year-end lists doesn't come out until football season.

Bands like the Shins don't do themselves justice playing at large venues like the bowl. It's difficult for a band that plays that "Simon and Garfunkel" style to capture an entire audience like that. Some bands just need to stick to small venues. Although I must say that the Shins were better on that platform than I expected.

And Jeff: Obviously Silvia loves your taste in music. She must hate working at Spaceland.

As well, don't front. You know you were one of the many that rushed the stage during Boy with the Arab strap.

That night you could definitely say that the Hollywood Bowl was filled to the brim with "twee".

Ya know Jeff, perhaps you should listen to your inner 15 yr. old more.
Every person I talked to said that the Shins were a bit crappy.
As for Belle & Sebastian and The Boy Least Likely to...
Maybe it is time to bust out with some Wu-Tang again.

I think I had the exact opposite reaction to the Shins live show. Thought that they had interesting banter on stage, even though the keyboardist wishes he was the lead singer and the sound was great; mostly because super producer Phil Ek was manning the sound board.

Yet what the Shins so dynamic and interesting was that they had two shitty bands open for them. It's kind of that, "Anybody but these guys would be better" syndrome.

I think it probably helped going inwith pretty low expectations. i'd heard a few people basically tell me the same thing about them beforehand. So I was pleased to get anything out of their set other than songs played live. It's tough for bands like that to really pull it off live considering their sound is pretty much tightly arranged pop songs. Next time the Little Ones come to NYC I advise you checking them out. They are a band in the Shins' genre but really dynamic on stage and they'll prolly play in a tiny venue too.

I saw The Shins about a year ago. Playing live, their sound is polished but the band is utterly undynamic. It was uncomfortable watching them lose an audience. By the end everyone was talking about milling around, and someone from the band (I forget who) said, somewhat apologetically, that he hoped we were enjoying the show. Mostly it was guys standing very still, looking nervous, with no humor or spontaneity.

I like to rawk and therefore the band is a little outside my core interests, but I like them anyway. When I'm hyperbolic I think they might be a new Simon & Garfunkel.
