It sounds to me like Passion of the Weiss has some serious issues with people playing a game he doesn't understand and having fun with it. Would you pay for a sporting event and then spend the whole game commenting on how bad the food is and how pointless the game is? Of course not, because that would be a waste of money and time. And unfortunately, so was your day at the Ren Faire.

I agree that, as a long time Ren-Faire performer, it is what you make of it. I'm an actor and have a great time playing and fighting at my home faire, NYRF. if you have a problem with the faire or don't like what you see there stop coming in my yard. its like saying "I don't like to swim" but you keep jumping in the pool.

Passion of the Weiss is clearly titillated by the bawdy goings-on at his local Ren Faire. And that's fine — certainly the bawdy atmosphere is a small, but intentional part of the fun. And I can say from experience as a (once, long ago) young man at Faire that it can be an overwhelming day for someone not quite in control of their hormones. I recommend going back in a few years and checking out the music, the food, the theater, the sword fighting, etc. I suspect (if what I've heard of the Renaissance Pleasure Faire is accurate; and if it matches the talent at the faire in my area) that they're really top notch. Yes, the boobs are difficult to ignore, but once you can pull your eyes away and see what else is going on, I'm sure you'll better understand why so many creative people pool their talents to create these huge annual events.

I don't know which Renaissance Faire you attended, nor do I know whether your account is completely truthful. I can tell you that the Renaissance Faire at which I perform features talented actors - many of whom have gone on to successful acting careers on stage and screen - musicians that are a pleasure to listen to, performances of actual Shakespeare plays and, yes, for those who enjoy them, some bawdy shows.

As with any group of people from actors to musicians to, well, anybody, there is flirting and sexual innuendo, as well as a web of relationships worthy of a soap opera. That has nothing to do with the Renaissance Faire environment and everything to do with just being human. You hinted that there was sex in the bathrooms - the same can be said of any rock concert or night club.

Maybe the real rule here is: Passion of the Weiss needs to grow up and see sex from an adult point of view rather than the half-curious, half-horrified perspective of a giggling third grader. I'm just sayin'...

I love the faire and reading this made me feel that this is how a lot of my friends and family do indeed view it...they won't go. I view it through a child's eyes, with fun and wonder. As for the sex, well history shows us sex shaped countries, chose kings and killed at will. Sex is big with humans, always has been. Did anyone see Rome??) I go to The Loire River Valley in France every year, home to the Renaissance kings and ride horses to their chateaus and palaces. the Faire brings to life a glorious time in our history, the birth of the arts, the emerging from the dark ages, a terrible time. How can that not be fascinating??? (Especially now, in a time when we are quickly reverting back to places none of us really want to go...maybe Devo was right...C, one of the beautiful at the faire

I will agree that most festival performers, vendors and patrons are indeed nerds, but the facts are that most of the performers and guests lead lives that are not all that interesting, most are decent normal people that do go home at the end of the day. Many “rennies” have families, are highly intellectual, educated, hard working, and decent people. From what I’ve met most are have professional jobs, such as engineers, scientists, network administrators, nurses, teachers, etc. They are a kind, caring community that is willing to help others out in need. This is hobby for most, whether performers, costumers, martial artists, craftsmen, history buffs, they really are just doing what they enjoy without harming others.

There is a mystery about the festival since there are a number of traveling folk, much like carnies they are looked at in a very negative fashion. I really can’t say what the traveling performers do in the late after hours, but with the local performers, the few “bad” ones are looked down upon for casting a negative reflection upon the whole.

At the festival here, there are morning services on Sundays for performers that aren’t able to attend church and the volunteer hours benefit the Tampa Museum of Science and Industry and help many students that need community service get into graduate school, or get scholarships plus community service looks good on a resume.

I think that you have missed one basic point. The sexual references at a Faire are there for the same reason that sexual references are made in Mundania, it sells stuff.

I know from my own experience that Faires do hire some ex-theater majors, but most of these players actually have day jobs as software engineers. Yes, they know that they need to get out more.

BTW, the sign on the toilets about kids is there because small children do "fall in" occasionally.

Interesting perspective. Of course, it is all in what the patron chooses to imagine. I have been participating in Faires for many years, including the SoCal Faire you sort-of describe, and I can tell you that at the end of the day, most Faire peoplejust have dinner and go to sleep, maybe sit around talking for awhile.

We do it because we love to play and to have fun. That is all. Stop trying to see something that is not there.

Oh, and by the way, bawdy was the way things really were in the 1500's. Read some literature and history from the time. If you had seen the Poxy Boggards, I guarantee you would not have been bored!

Funny! But all but one of the pictures appear to come from faires other than the one in Irwindale. And the one that does looks old. Why illustrate a post with images other than those from the event in Irwindale, when there are tons of picts of show around, assuming you didn't take any of your own?

And when you add it that it takes maybe 20 minutes to get to Irwindale from LA, one wonders.. Then again, it could depend on traffic.
