Perhaps you are right Jeff, I also really hate Bright Eyes. But, I feel I must confess that I really dislike MMJ. I saw them at the Troubadour w/Detachment Kit and all I could think was "too bad for this lame band trying to live up to the RAD that is the Detachment Kit!"
See, sometimes we agree, sometimes we do not.

Oh man...having to sit through Oberst, I don't know if anything is worth it for that. I think I'd rather watch a Tool show than see Bright Eyes...and I fucking hate Tool.

Nice review. I've seeen MMJ a few times and they're capable of putting on an amazing show. The first show was at the Avalon. I wasn't a big fan of their records (too long - I agree with Ian) but they blew me away. I also saw them at the Austin City Limits festival. That was a mediocre show (mainly because they were having major sound issues). Then I saw Jim James on that weird tour with M. Ward and Conor Oberst. JJ was great, but I had to sit through Oberst too. Ugh. Then I saw them at the Fonda. Some great moments.

I think that Tical was alright, but he's since gotten worse. When it comes to one-verse rappers, I think Jada and Ludacris are king among kings.

1) You know I have this one friend whose taste in music I really respect and he has maintained since the day it came out that Tical 2000 is a brilliant album. Therefore, every year or so, I try listening to it to see if he's right and I never make it past "Retro Godfather," not because the song's so terrible (because it's prolly just mediocre to slightly bad, but because its called Retro Godfather. I'd say Meth has to be the best 1-verse rapper of all time yet one of the weakest solo careers in recent memory for someone with talent.

2)I wish. I really like that song. If he played it I didn't hear it, but Nas wasn't there so I doubt it.

3) This year Coachella was pretty weak on hip hop. The only three hip hop acts I caught were Digable Planets, Atmosphere and Gnarls Barkely (which I guess counts because he played the hip hop tent). I wanted to see Common but had already seen him before so I caught another act and Kanye. In general, they're pretty mediocre at attracting great hip hop acts, though I did catch the Black Star reunion last year at Coachella, but unfortunately they kind of sucked due to Kweli having a fierce cold that made his voice practically inaudible. i also once caught a Def Jux set of basically the entire label other than Can Ox and it blew my mind.

1) Great call on Tical 2000, easily one of the most disappointing albums ever given Meth's potential. He just totally lost his way once he blew up, huh?

2) Did Mr. Jr. Gong do that song with Nas? The one on which he sounds like he's recovering from drinking too much whiskey too fast?

3) Are there any rap acts of consequence at Coachella?

No...they played the Troubadour in November for two nights when they opened with the National who were actually a great deal better than CYHSY. And in the aftermath of seeing them both and listening to their albums I think Alligator wears just as well too. I think the National might have a better career overall. And c'mon Sylvia...do we disagree that much? What am I so wrong about in the indie world. I do think the Fiery furnaces suck doesn't that score me some points. I know you hate them.

And Ian, I think it sadly might come down to the OC factor. How much did Death Cab and Modest Mouse blow up after they played the Bait Shop? Millions of people watch that show each week, it's the best advertising anyone can ever buy. But What a sad commentary on the music scene 2006. I'll take MMJ over those two anyday, even though I do like modest mouse as much as the next guy.

When did CYHSY play Spaceland? Your review was exactly how I felt leaving their El Rey show a few months ago. Yawn.
But seriously...Most of the time I totally disagree with you.

My Morning Jacket is the realest fucking deal in all of live music. Anyone who sees them is an instant believer (the same goes for Arcade Fire). I saw them at the 40 Watt this past summer and they absolutely killed, even though (or maybe because) the venue was the sweatiest, most frat-house smelling atmosphere I've ever been in other than my own frat house. At least until "Z," they were far more effective live than on record (where they tend to ramble), but post-"Z," I don't know how they're not enormous. I really thought "Off The Record" was going to be 2005's "Float On."
